SAN ANTONIO AREA SERVICE
German Cockroaches
German cockroaches are the small, fast indoor species you find behind kitchen appliances, in cabinet hinges, and around plumbing. They're THE hardest cockroach to evict because of their reproductive speed and pyrethroid resistance.
Scientific name: Blattella germanica Service area: San Antonio + within ~15 miles (Helotes, Stone Oak, Leon Springs, Fair Oaks Ranch).
At a glance
| Size | 10–15 mm |
| Color | Light tan to brown with two dark longitudinal stripes on the pronotum |
| Active period | Nocturnal; primarily indoor |
| Habitat in homes | Kitchens, bathrooms, behind appliances, inside cabinet hinges, around dishwashers |
| Famous trait | Females carry an egg case (ootheca) until 1–2 days before hatch — 30+ nymphs per case |
Identification
Two distinctive dark stripes behind the head are the diagnostic feature. Adults have wings but rarely fly. Egg cases are small dark capsules sometimes seen attached to the female's abdomen.
Risk profile
Major asthma + allergy trigger, especially in kids. Carry bacteria including Salmonella and Staph. Multiply fast — visible day-time activity usually means the population is already large.
How we treat it
Bait + insect growth regulator (IGR) is the primary approach. Liquid spray alone doesn't work because German cockroaches are widely resistant to OTC pyrethroids. We also do exclusion (sealing cracks behind cabinets, around plumbing) and source reduction (removing food + water access). Follow-up at 2 weeks and 4 weeks.
